The benefits were use of the screen in the seat in front and use of the tray table (possible in the seat we had). We were on long-haul flights with complimentary meal service, so this meant kiddo's meal tray could go on their own tray table instead of mine. And limits on screen time went out the proverbial window while on a plane. Whether you want to forward-face or rear-face on the plane is your decision. If there is a survivable airline incident, your child is safer rear-facing. But the chance of an incident are so low your child is safer completely unrestrained on the plane than properly strapped into her properly installed car seat in the car your relatives are driving to your destination. I suggest you have a way to get both the car seat and your child through the airport without having to carry either in your arms. We flew semi-regularly before the kids started school, so I had a folding luggage cart (from the luggage section of a big box store) that I strapped the car seat to. I ran a bungee cord through the forward-facing belt path and hooked it to the cart itself. It was stable enough I would let the child ride through the airport in the car seat if they wanted. If you have a way to wear your toddler, especially in a back carry, I strongly suggest bringing it. I last used my mei tai carrier when my then 4 year-old passed out on the terminal floor. With the kid on my back, my hands were free to haul the car seat and hand luggage onto our connecting flight. If you are bringing a stroller, Itchy posted several examples of how people have transported child and car seat through the airport on a stroller. If your carry-on is a small suitcase with wheels, you can strap a Next car seat to one of those. The bungees in Itchy's photo is one way to do it. I have also heard to get a large ring (solid or key ring), clip the LATCH straps and top tether strap to the ring, then cinch the straps around the suitcase. Regardless of what solution you choose, try. it. at. home. first. You want to know what you are doing well before you get to the airport, when you can't run to the hardware store for a shorter bungee cord.
